Determinants of share repurchases: a quantile regression approach

چکیده

This study utilizes quantile regressions to investigate the effect of determinants share repurchases on firms at different points distribution. Empirical results from a large panel NYSE repurchasing firms, document an asymmetric several in terms size, significance and direction. Excess capital, stock options growth opportunities are significant throughout distribution their impact increases successive quantiles while ownership concentration leverage exhibit sign reversals between lower upper quantiles. These differing effects attributed highly heterogeneous firm characteristics across

Determinants of House Prices: A Quantile Regression Approach

OLS regression has typically been used in housing research to determine the relationship of a particular housing characteristic with selling price. Results differ across studies, not only in terms of size of OLS coefficients and statistical significance, but sometimes in direction of effect. This study suggests that some of the observed variation in the estimated prices of housing characteristi...

Share Repurchases and Employee Compensation

This paper focuses on the agency problem derived from the con‡ict of interest between employees and shareholders. I show that if employees are compensated with restricted stock or stock options, shareholders may engage in opportunistic share repurchases. Equityholders have an incentive to buy back stock after employment contracts have been signed because repurchases increase compensation sensit...

Dividends, Share Repurchases, and the Substitution Hypothesis

We show that repurchases have not only became an important form of payout for U.S. corporations, but also that firms finance their share repurchases with funds that otherwise would have been used to increase dividends. We find that young firms have a higher propensity to pay cash through repurchases than they did in the past and that repurchases have become the preferred form of initiating a ca...

The Real Effects of Share Repurchases∗

We employ a regression discontinuity design to identify the real effects of share repurchases on other firm outcomes. The probability of share repurchases that increase earnings per share (EPS) is sharply higher for firms that would have just missed the EPS forecast in the absence of the repurchase, when compared with firms that “just beat” the EPS forecast. We use this discontinuity to show th...

A Quantile Regression Approach to Firm Growth

This paper explores the firm growth rate distribution in a Gibrat's Law context. The aim is to provide an empirical exploration of the determinants of firm growth. The work is novel in two respects. First, rather than limiting the analysis to focus on the conditional mean growth level, we investigate the complete shape of the distribution. Second, we show that the differences in the firm growth...
